Marriage Traditions in Poland

A classic Polish ceremony used to be a three or perhaps four morning matter. Often, it was held outside in parks, woodland and stables. They were a celebration of life and the reward of character. Now, however, many couples choose to forgo the chapel and simply have a service in their apartment or yard with close family and friends. They still enjoy the wonderful meals, audio and liquor but it’s not quite what it once was.

On the day of the marriage, just before midnight ( or around it if a one- moment marriage), comes the famous service known as “oczepiny”, the unveiling of the bride. At this point, the shroud is removed and she dons her czepek – a cap worn by Polish angels to depict their standing as married ladies. This is also when the much locks are unbraided and cut little, as a symbol of her changeover from boyhood to woman.

As the few leave the church, guests shower them with currencies and grains, to give them luck and prosperity. They therefore change into their celebration attire. It is also conventional to toss little, circular coins into the child’s hair– whoever collects the most will remain in charge of their finances.
